In a bid to reduce financial pressure on parents and promoting free and equitable access to basic education, the Kwara State Government has announced the cancellation of the Parents-Teachers Association (PTA) levy in all public primary schools across the state. The decision, which takes immediate effect.
Making the announcement in Ilorin, the Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Prof. Shehu Raheem Adaramaja, said the state government has approved the introduction of annual school grants to cater for the operational needs previously covered by PTA contributions. He noted that the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to making public education truly free and accessible for all children in the state.
Prof. Adaramaja further disclosed that Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has also approved the free distribution of English and Mathematics textbooks to pupils in public primary schools to improve learning outcomes. He explained that the gesture forms part of the administration’s broader education reform agenda designed to upgrade facilities, motivate teachers, and strengthen foundational learning.
He added that the State Universal Basic Education Board, in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), is implementing a number of intervention projects across the state. These include classroom construction and renovation, provision of furniture, improved safety in schools, access to clean water through solar-powered boreholes, and the establishment of digital literacy centres.
According to him, these efforts are consistent with the state’s vision to revitalize the basic education sector, enhance the learning environment, and ensure that every child in Kwara State enjoys quality education without financial barriers.
